AJ’s career spans over 30 years advising companies, coalitions and associations on federal, state and international public policy issues. AJ has a successful track record heading the Washington office
of a Fortune 500 company, managing and helping to build two different independent companies into public affairs units of global marketing communications firms, and developing and implementing government relations and public affairs strategies on legislative, regulatory, legal and global issues.
Prior to forming Advocom Group, AJ was the chief operating officer and a principal with the Dewey Square Group, a national public affairs and grassroots consulting firm. At Dewey Square, AJ advised private sector and non profit clients on public policy issues, crisis communications and business development opportunities. His clients included firms in financial services, global manufacturing, technology, and government contracting along with non profit advocacy coalitions.
Prior to joining Dewey Square, AJ spent five years leading an independent public relations firm focused on government affairs and litigation communications consulting. He successfully managed a multi-year litigation communications project for the firm’s largest client and he managed client teams implementing national and international litigation communications strategies related to mass torts, antitrust, and environmental disputes.
Before becoming a consultant, AJ was a Washington lobbyist and head of the Washington, D.C. government affairs office for 3M. As the company’s top federal lobbyist, he advised the company’s CEO and senior management on Congressional strategy, issues management, grassroots, trade association activities and international public affairs. He represented the company before Congress and the Administration on issues such as trade, transportation, environment, product liability and product specific regulatory issues. He chaired and served as 3M’s representative on government relations committees and task forces of national trade associations and coalitions such as the Business Roundtable, National Association of Manufacturers, Chemical Specialty Manufacturers Association, ECAT and the US Chamber.
AJ also advised 3M’s European and Asia/Pacific Public Affairs Committees on strategies to build and enhance 3M public affairs capabilities globally. He represented 3M international business development in discussions with US Department of Commerce and the US State Department and he represented 3M interests in Washington, DC based international organizations.
AJ is an attorney and member of the District of Columbia Bar. He received his law degree from the University of Florida and his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University.
AJ Is a distant relative of the 7th President of the United States — Andrew Jackson.
