Introducing a Renowned Hospital Brand in China

Client Background

One of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States offering a complete range of health care services for children from birth through 21 years of age. It is home to the world’s largest research enterprise based at a pediatric medical center, and more than 1,100 scientists, including seven members of the National Academy of Sciences, 14 members of the Institute of Medicine and 14 members of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute comprise its research community.

The Challenge

There is a dire and urgent need for leadership and reform in certain Chinese health care markets, which is recognized by the government and is understood by entrepreneurs and the existing health community. As a global leader, the hospital is frequently solicited for projects and business ventures in China, but without an overarching strategy or leadership to effectively evaluate and advance potential partnerships, many projects are not seen to fruition.

The Solution

Advocom Group worked with the client’s senior executive team to expand their relationship network in China and to develop and enact a system to evaluate and progress new and existing partnerships. The long-term goal of these relationships is to establish one of the world’s first global models for collaborative patient care, by using a new model of engagement in China: bringing together the Chinese government; the medical and academic community; the investor community and Chinese-Hong Kong philanthropists and foundations that have very different approaches to giving.

Results & Key Highlights

  • Led and organized an exploratory trip to China for hospital leaders, leading to meetings with over 90 Chinese leaders in health care, investment, philanthropic, academic and government industries.

  • Convened a forum in Beijing, co-hosted by a government media outlet, attended by over 40 senior leaders of Chinese hospitals, academic institutions, government, investors and philanthropic foundations.

  • Meetings with the central government resulted in the government signaling its desire and openness to work with the hospital on a number of future initiatives.
